In the last 50 years of television, one iconic news magazine
television show has a major influence on the culture and thinking of American
and international audiences. In 1968, CBS Production and CBS News Production
brought forth a new concept in news reporting by introducing a 10-15 news
segment which used new techniques like hidden-cameras. They called this show 60
Minutes.
60 Minutes used the concept of a reporter in the field
attempting to research and obtain answers that called national attention to and
informed the public of corruption and malpractices in corporate, government,
and religious organizations. They also reported on the lives of the famous and
infamous who intrigued and shocked the public. The Vietnam War was brought to
the living room for the first time with the true cost of freedom and sacrifice
of their own families and neighbors. The fall of a sitting president with the
reporting of the Watergate Scandal was another major story that has reformed
the way that politicians are now viewed and voted upon. The interviews with
world leaders helped bring forth a face that represented the ideals and beliefs
of their countries. Some of the reporters who have worked on this show have been Dan Rather, Ed Bradley, Diane Sawyer, Steve Kroft, Morley Safer, Andy Rooney, and Mike Wallace. These individuals forged a new style of reporting which has now been adopted by other networks around the world. Many of these individuals have become beloved icons in their own right. Their efforts helped to bring recognition and awards to the show. 60 Minutes has won 95 Emmy Awards and is one of the longest television shows in history. It was given the honor of being ranked six on the 50 Greatest TV shows of all time in 2002. 60 Minutes is the standard that most news strive to adhere to.
